I feel like i didnt give the whitestripes enough credit in the last post. they were damn good. jack was much more personable and talkative at this new years show than at any of the previous 3 ive attended.
how come ive never read, ever, in any interview how weird jack white's talking voice is. its just fucking weird. like hes doing some sort of character voice. its creepy. but why have i never read anywhere in all the whitestripes press that jack talks like a freak? never. i would think after conducting an interview with said rock star, it would be the first thing a reporter would report. its that weird. unless its some sort of put on for the shows, but somehow, i dont think so.

back to not giving the whitestripes enough credit, ball and biscuit was definitely the highlight of their set. he manhandles that guitar. im awed. im always impressed by guitar playing, but tell myself if i tried really hard i could do it. but what he does, i cant even comprehend that all that goodness is coming out of one little guitar, let alone think about trying to replicate it.

next time....adventures in seeing people you know who pretend to not know who you are.

here we go.

the holidays were great. fun christmas (eve) festivities at the new home of the parents, a relatively normal christmas...pigging out on leftovers and all. but all i can think about right now is new years eve. chicago. aragon ballroom. line out the door and around the corner to get in. worth every freezing second of waiting in line. blanche. flaming lips. white stripes. the absolute best way in the country to ring in the new year. im confident in declaring that there is no band on earth more fun than the flaming lips. impossible. i dont think ive had that much fun ever in my life. Inflatable dancing sunshine people, girls dancing around in their undies and pasties on stage, monkey puppets, more confetti and balloons and fog and fun than an adult mind could comprehend. and the everybody LOVED it. the flaming lips told the whole story behind the 'thank you jack white for the fiber optic jesus that you gave me song' and how, sadly, they left it on too long and it melted, and then there was a big singalong. actually, all of the flaming lips songs were singalongs. it was like a barney concert for adults. i cant possibly put into words the amount of fun had in that 4500 capacity venue.

the whitestripes were good too... the flaming lips/white stripes onstage together doing seven nation army to ring in the new year was genius. my one and only complaint about the night is that the bill should have been flipped. nobody should have to follow the flaming lips. not even the whitestripes could put on a better show. the momentum of the night kinda slowed down after the flaming lips left the stage. it was still amazing in the scheme of things, but the fun factor dipped down by about 50percent.

if theres a new musical/religious cult headed by wayne coyne, count me in. yoshimi battling the pink robots 24/7. but if wayne doesnt go the cult route, those polyphonic spree folks look like theyre enjoying themselves quite a bit too.

adding to a fun chicago trip was a stop at blue chicago for some real live local blues, deep dish pizza galore, reckless records and the virgin megastore.

and before we left the chicago metro area we stopped at ikea, and i drooled over their extremely affordable and really cool looking stuff for about 2 hours. we really need an ikea nearer here.

we didnt make it to the aquarium, for a number of reasons, but one large deterrence was the admission price 21 dollars a person.

and since returning from chicago ive had a manicure and a pedicure, got in a minor car accident, and helped clean up after a major flood in my bosses basement.
in case you were wondering.

the recorded tunes

i want my money back

radiohead, hail to the thief

blur, think tank

two of the albums i was most excited about this year, and they were by far two of the most disappointing.  they were totally non-relevant.  both of them.  crazy beat? no thanks! i need something.  just a little something.  i was willing to open up and try something new.  but this was just crap.  and i splurged on both of these and got the limited edition, fancy packaging.  what a waste.  i want my money back.
