as i mentioned earlier, last monday i decided to drive the 6 hours to atlanta to see joseph arthur. some people might call me crazy (in fact i think my dad did just that) but i figured what the hell, it beats yet another unremarkable night sitting at home on the couch. and the trip had the added benifit of meeting up with vancouver joel, who was in town to film the show, and who i hadnt seen since coachella. it turned out to be more than worth the trip. the show was amazing. completely different than the previous 2 times i had seen j.a. live circa 2002 and 2000. back then it was just j.a. and some crazy pedals on stage. this time it was a gigantic band (which sounded amazing) and lots of onstage antics.
he's got legs, and he knows how to use 'em
 a romantic serenade
 fun with toilet paper
oh...and dancing...lots and lots of very strange dancing. the antics weren't totally over the top a la flaming lips...they were sprinkled in here in there to keep it interesting.
but the best part of the experience hands down, happened after the show. basically we got to see a pissed off/slightly intoxicated/medicated? j.a. get into an extended fight (verbal) with an even more intoxicated fan/friend of the band backstage (since joel was filming the show we were back there to return the camera). j.a. was in a bad mood because he was being heckled by some super drunk people and had a few technical problems, but his mood seemed to be most affected by the poor attendance at the show. said something like 'ive been doing this for 7 years and only 13 people showed up' (there were probably 50-75 people actually there)... and i dont know if youve ever tried to reason with a drunk person, but this argument just went around in circles....from 'dude get the hell out of my face' to 'lets hug it out' and back and forth for like 10 minutes....
then i got to chance to talk to j.a. breifly(hes REALLY tall), tell him that though there weren't many people there, I really enjoyed the show, and thought he was pretty great. we rode down in an elevator with him, he talked some more drunk?/dissapointed speak, and then we were on our way.
i felt really bad for him, because its a total shame that as talented as he is hes still playing to '13 people'...but that seems to be the case with so many of 'my bands'. and i dont know what to do about it except keep buying their albums, going to their shows, and telling anyone who will listen how amazing they are. maybe at some point this radio career will allow me to be in the position to make a true difference. till then it's j.t. and hinder every 90 mins.
i got super lost in atlanta on the way to the show...the city made me feel stupid as hell. i was kinda glad to be hopping in the car and leaving on tuesday morning. i definitely wished that chris and his super boyscout navigating skills had been with me.
