new tunes!
so it took me a day longer than i anticipated to get to the record store. i was actually planning on going yesterday, but when i called east alley records to find out what their deal was with buying back tunes (every place does it differently...certain days and times and so on) i didnt want to walk in there with a big ol bag of tunes only to be turned away. so i called and the guy said i could normally bring them in anytime, but not last night because somebody unfamiliar was filling in at the store while the rest of the crew went to the travis show at the state theatre. so i had to wait until today, but it was definitely worth it. i got fifty bucks in trade, but somehow ended up at the counter with seventy-five dollars worth of stuff. funny how that happens. i still have a huge bag of stuff he didnt need/want. maybe ill go try to peddle them elsewhere before i toss them or give them away ( im pretty sure NOBODY would be interested in any of it....its that bad...but sometimes im wrong on what people like. i just got an email from my uncle george saying the first song he purchased from itunes was All the Things She Said by t.A.T.u. i would have never guessed that in a million years. never.)
so anyhow, i walked out of the store with a 25.00 charge on the visa, a big brown paper bag of reject cds and the following new tunes for my collection:

death cab for cutie you can play these songs with chords (saw them two weeks ago at the majestic and was very impressed. their latest album is called transatlanticism, and its brilliant. its a real album kind of album. it makes sense start to finish. finish to start. and transatlanticism is a great title for a record. say it. transatlanticism. trans-atlanticism. transatlanticism. love it. i also love the one before transatlanticism, the photo album. so i decided to dive backward into their catalog and pick this up. )

the chemical brothers singles 93-03 (limited edition. including songs featuring richard ashcroft(ex-verve), noel gallagher(one of those evil oasis guys) and wayne coyne (flaming lips mastermind))

guided by voices do the collapse (just 4.99 used. couldnt pass up a deal like that. )

the strokes room on fire (finally. ok. maybe not finally. its only been out for two days. but it feels like finally.)

kent b-sidor 95-00 (its in swedish, so i assume the name means b-sides, but i cant say for sure. )

the kent album was the most expensive at 23.00, because its an import, but the guy knocked a couple of bucks off for some reason or another. to be nice i guess. not that it was overpriced at 23.00, its available for 27 at amazon, and theres only 1 left in stock there.
thats definitely a good reason to shop regularly at your independent record stores. go somewhere, make friends, get deals. you can bet your sweet ass that isnt going to be happening at best buy.

on another price note, i got an import copy of elbows new album on amazon for 26 bucks, which isnt available here until like january (a tad bit expensive, but sometimes you just have to have something right now. (which translates to 7-12 days in amazon time, but still)) and i saw it today at east alley for 19.

looking forward to quality listening time will all the new tunes. i opened up kent and put it right in on the way home, but im going to have to find time to give all these tunes proper listening sessions.

on another note....
tomorrow is halloween. im going to be medusa. got a kick ass costume. gold snake headdress, long black greek like dress thing. the only thing i cant quite figure out is there's no green in it whatsover. i always associate medusa with green. so do i do green makeup, and if not, what do i do? gold? black? gold and black? green and gold and black? can you see dilemma? and i have fake eyelashes id like to wear, but theyre black with siver. faux pas?
i guess ill sleep on it.

time to watch some scrubs on the tivo. one of my favorite comedies. quirky. not shitty and predictable like, well, almost everything else on tv. im not saying that to be a snob, its just.....well..... its just true.

rem has been making the rounds on the tv to promote their best of album that came out tuesday. being lucky enough to have the tivo at home, i just set it all up to record and ive seen them on a&e, leno and most recently the ellen degeneres show this morning. on both leno and ellen, m.s. had some sort of airbrushed blue makeup on his eyebrows and on the sides of his head and up onto the tip-top of his ears. it was rather subtle but still visually very interesting. a little alien like, especailly with the ear monitors he wears with the wires all looped up high above his ears . im fascinated.

if this whole radio thing doesnt work out, maybe i could become a professional web designer. ha!

ive got a big ol' bag of cds in my car that im going to sell after work today. some of them i made copies of before putting them in the get rid of pile, and some of them i have been collecting dust for the last 5 years, so it was time for us to part. cut down on the clutter a little. actually, ill be trading, instead of selling most likely. time for some new good tunes. as much as i like the convenience of amazon and other online stores, nothing compares to digging through the bins at a dirty little record store.

or having a drink with friends at a dirty little bar.

halloween is just 2 days away. i broke down and spent 40 bucks on a medusa costume. there is a really cool snake headdress/crown-like thing that i just couldnt replicate. i think the plan is to go to a party with my sister and her friends. should be fun. and then i can give her her slightly belated birthday present. but in my own defense, i did have the present well before her actual birthday, its just that she's always in mt. p. visiting her boyfriend, so i didn't have a chance to see her before hand to get her the whole present. also in my defense, i did give her part of the present early, because i knew that the rest might be late. when i talked to her last night i was a little jealous becasue she had cake for breakfast. its the kind with the colored candy chip thingys in it. she claims it is her favorite kind, but clearly she stole the idea from me. it has been my favorite for as long as i can remember. and becasue im the elder sister, she definitely stole it from me. and the sad thing is i didnt even have cake this year for my birthday. we were going to make lo-carb brownies, but i just skipped it altogether. man, thats willpower. i can tell you right now i WILL be having cake for my birthday next year.

im glad im not in california right now. most of the time i wish i was, but right now, not so much. cant they do anything to make the fires stop. seems to me like there should be SOMETHING better to do than just let the whole state burn to the ground.

so im starting a website. it looks like crap. and will probably continue to look like crap until i figure out what the hell im doing. which will probably be never. but im not gonna let that get in my way.

the new strokes album 'room on fire' is out today, and if the recorded versions of the songs are half as good as they were live, well then damnit its gonna be a good album. its pretty rare that i go and buy an album the day its released (i hate paying full price for the tunes) but i will make the exception for this one.

there was a review of the live show in this past weeks metro times that i had a bit of a problem with. mainly the glaring factual errors, but also the attitude with which it was written.
here's the article:
http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=5552
and here's my response to its author:

"I was rather disappointed in your Strokes review in this past week’s paper, not only because I rather enjoyed the show, but also because it contained a pair of glaring factual errors. The new album did not come out last week as your review stated, but is in fact due out tomorrow, 10/28. Also in the article you state “When the band was done, the members simply exited the stage, purposely without an encore.” If you hadn’t bolted out of the show in disgust, you would have found that the Strokes did indeed come out for an encore. And it was fun. Julian climbed on the speakers and up the wall of the stage and jumped into the crowd. Cheesy, yes. But an encore from a band that doesn’t do encores, pretty cool.

From the music editor of the Metro Times, I figured that I could at the very least expect factual accuracy.

The show was what it was. I didn’t expect to see the ‘saviors of rock’ that night, I just expected to have a good time seeing a band I enjoy. And I did. I abandoned my too cool for the room attitude for a night and enjoyed myself. You should try it sometime. It might do you, and your readers some good."

i felt much better after sending the letter.

rem best of comes out today as well. there's two new songs on the album, bad day and animal, but i already own all the other stuff in triplicate. no need for this purchase for now. but the spirit will probably move me when in the record store and ill end up spend 20 bucks for quadruplicates (is this even a word?)

good new music tuesday. now if only it would stop raining.
